Waters of Oshun is dedicated to finding its own brick and mortar home. It will be a holistic space for BIPOC survivors of physical violence. Waters will house trauma-informed practitioners.of alternative modalities. Some of the offerings will be, massage. acupuncture, mindfulness meditation and talk therapy. The space will also house book clubs, twelve step programs and workshops with leaders in the field of sexual violence and trauma.
The goal is to make it a haven for those with nowhere else to go. It will not be a shelter rather a community center set in Harlem, NY an area heavily populated with BIPOC, but with the fewest resources for this population in terms of holistic healing.
Oshun is the Orisha of Sweet Water found in African and diasporic cosmologies. She bathes all who ask her with her water that will cleanse and soothes the body and soul.
The seeds of Waters of Oshun began when Keisha worked as an intern at CONNECT Faith, under the umbrella of CONNECT a Harlem-based organization which provides education for people and organizations about Domestic Violence/Intimate Partner Violence which work to create peaceful communities. Keisha realized that there were a great many gender-based violence organizations that focused on services and therapy for victim-survivors but none with healing modalities. Waters of Oshun was born. Our goal, once we are brick and mortar, will be a place primarily for BIPOC - turning no one away - to experience healing modalities that may be out of reach do to finances or location.
Waters of Oshun presently offers virtual support groups, blogging and podcast (coming soon) and we create customized curriculum for organizations interested in bringing information about Domestic Violence/Intimate Partner Violence to their employees, stakeholders, and those in positions of power.
The Podcast and Blog - called the Waterfall - is where all people can go to learn about the latest resources and information about sexual violence. There will be leaders in the anti gender-based violence community writing blogs and being guests on the podcast.
Information about upcoming events will be distributed through our newsletter.
Waters of Oshun presently creates customized curriculum for organizations and groups interested in learning more about gender-based violence and how to recognize it and most importantly how to help.
Please contact us for pricing. Cost varies on the size and needs of the curriculum needed
Our Support Groups are free and meet for seven weeks four times a year.
Support groups are for survivors who are one year out of their abusive relationship or violent event. This choice is to support people who have had some processing work done as opposed to those where the violence is still fresh. We encourage people who are less than one year out of their violent situation to seek professional help and we have a list of trauma-informed referrals.
